Disk Encryption Evaluation Link

SafeNet authentication and token technology control access to an employee's desktop/laptop computer, as well as to the data that resides on that computer. However, this level of protection is no longer enough to protect valuable data on laptops used by traveling executives, salespeople, and telecommuters. Many companies are now adding hard drive and file/folder encryption security capabilities for these types of mobile users.

Laptop theft is causing great concern, not for the cost of the laptop, but for the value of the information it contains. The theft of a laptop can result in a large financial loss, of which only a small percentage of the sum actually relates to the cost of the laptop itself. To solve this problem, software solutions have been created to encrypt files stored in designated directories or the entire hard disk. SafeNet’s ProtectDrive, ProtectFile, and ProtectPack Data-at-Rest Protection products, especially when used in combination with SafeNet’s iKey™ USB token or Model 330 Smart Card, provide the strongest access control and data protection solution available.

How Does Disk Encryption Work with a SafeNet USB Token or Smart Card?
The smart card or USB token is used to store the "key" for the encryption and decryption of the files. Therefore, if a laptop is lost or stolen, chances are the token will still be in the possession of the owner, so the data on the laptop will remain secure. Even someone highly determined to retrieve the data will give up, reformat the hard drive, and then, out of frustration, sell the laptop. In the world of information security, there is a simple rule: "If you cannot protect the data, destroy it." Using disk encryption in this way, a company's only loss is the hardware itself.

When SafeNet's smart card/USB token technology is implemented with ProtectDrive disk encryption, a user must insert their USB token or smart card and enter their PIN in order to authenticate and gain access to applications and data. This capability ensures that if the laptop or PC is ever lost or stolen, unauthorized users cannot access any data on the machine. Finally, if a user removes their token or smart card while using their computer, it will force a secure "lock-down" mode that requires reinsertion of the token/smart card and entry of their PIN to unlock the machine for use.
